Welcome to Detroit’s cannabis college, recently opened with courses on how to grow marijuana - and harvest, cook and sell it too - after Michigan legalized the drug as a medicine. Students get instruction from horticulturalists, doctors and lawyers as well as hands-on experience cultivating plants and guidance on how to protect their stash from the criminal element.
I wonder if the syllabus is printed on rolling papers. Word on the street is that the midterm on midgrades is a doobie…I mean doozy.
Another dispatch from up here in Canadia, where at the Toronto International Film Festival, during a presentation of a film that’s about him and the White Stripes (Under Great White Northern Lights) Jack White entertained the crowd by pulling a Kanye. But not really. But maybe, kind of?
a) it’s Plaxico Burress, who’s dumber, more annoying, and more selfish than the average wideout;
b) it’s Plaxico Burress;
c) it’s a New York Giant;
d) he shot himself in the fucking leg, and then got charged with a crime because of it, which scores about a 7.5 on the Unintentional Comedy Scale.
Anyway, he’s getting sent away to the clink today, and, based on speculation, will be eligible to play ball again when he’s 35. Given the fact that receivers tend to get faster with age, he should be fine. Oh wait, they don’t? Hm. Maybe he could rejoin the draft and get picked by the Lions.
Also: Ten bucks New England fans are making jokes at least fifteen times more mean-spirited than this post.
Our good friend ET caught up with Detroit emcee Finale to discuss his J Dilla tribute, “Paid Homage.” Production on the song is handled by Flying Lotus.
It’s a recap of what happened the first time we met face to face.
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead The Century Of Self
Justice Records
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead were never were able to rise out of indie rock underground, but really, what did we expect? Their name, sound and live show conjure thoughts of chaos. They might be the indie rock equivalent of one of Bob Knight’s old temper tantrums on the basketball court- poweful songs with melody and tempo shifts, brilliantly compelling if a little hard to take in all at once. Their new release The Century Of Self signals that despite any efforts their fans, or the media, or their record label might have made to bring them a broader mainstream audience, the band is happy with who they are and how they sound. This keeps them interesting and compelling, more than 10 years into their recording career. The album is an expansion of their instrumentation while still sticking to an apocalyptic ethic in song structure. As lead singer Conrad Keely intones on “Far Pavilions”, “Past love and hatred lies our greatness”. Perhaps that shall serve as the band’s mantra. Standout tracks include “Far Pavilions”, the reflective “Halcyon Days”, “Luna Park”, “Bells Of Creation”.
