DEER TICK ON VIMBY! The cure to my bandweasel blues.

If you’ve been a band weasel/music industry employee for as long as I have, it’s super duper easy to become a cynical bastard.  If you go to enough shows because you have to as opposed to because you want to, it’s hard to avoid the overwhelming feeling that you are watching 5 dudes standing there playing their instruments.  Not much to see here folks… So you can imagine my surprise when I watched the latest VIMBY music segment on Deer Tick and found myself tapping my left toe, enjoyed the soundbytes from the interview, and started cruising around the net to hear and see more.  Let’s be clear, I was familiar with the band prior to the video (I green lit VIMBY preditor extraordinaire Elizabeth Spear to produce the segment) but it took me watching her compelling segment to really separate the band from all the other bands with “Deer” in their name.  Move over, Deerhunter and Deerhoof, there’s a new sheriff in town. Damn if watching this doesn’t make you want to bust out a Shiner Bock at your desk.

…and after you’re done rocking out with Elizabeth and the band in Austin, check out more tracks at hypem.

Shooting The Sh!t With Black Joe Lewis Part Two

Here’s part two of our daily microseries with the one, the only Black Joe Lewis. We shoot the proverbial poop about musical influences on this one. If one hears his album Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!, one might think that Joe exclusively listens to Wilson Pickett, James Brown and Otis Redding. One would be quite wrong.

Song O’ The Day: Black Lips “Drugs”

I love this VIMBY video of the Lips in Philly. Spending time in a market other than NYC or LA yields great results; many of our best music segments are in markets such as Philadelphia, Nashville, Austin, etc. These dudes have a certain swagger that is just rock n’ roll so they get props from me.

Puma and VIMBY @ SXSW

Puma cruised through the SXSW festival this year with a giant Puma Clyde.  A who’s who of artists from the festival autographed the shoe for the charity Soles4Soles.org.  VIMBY caught it all on tape and broke it into two parts ’cause mad heads ended up signing the shoe… even the legendary Quincy Jones.
