Students at a Kansas middle school are protesting after one of the school’s most popular teachers was fired on Monday. The offense? He made a penis joke about the shape of Florida. Last month Shawnee Mission science teacher Ryan Haraughty drew a map of the United States in order to explain how the jet stream works, and when students corrected his rendering of the nation’s largest peninsula he made an offhand remark that Florida “must be excited.”
I wonder if he would have caught flack for pointing at a picture of Wrigley Field and saying that it’s “the world’s largest gay bar.”

Yeah, so we are the state shaped as a penis….or a GUN if you want to look at it in another light. We have fantastic tourism, mickey mouse, sandy beaches, good food and hot people everywhere.

You missed the point, Felicia. He wasn’t making fun of Florida. He just drew Florida out of proportion during a lesson on the jet stream and the kids said something about it and he said “Sorry guys, Florida got excited.” Some kid told their parent and the parent went to the principal/school board and the teacher was fired. My kids went to that school and one of them had Mr. Haraughty for a teacher. He’s a great teacher, the kids love him, the parents love him and this whole thing is because the principal, Susie Ostmeyer, has a personal vendetta against Mr. Haraughty for some reason. He has been at the school 11 years and she is fairly new there and has never liked him. She saw an opportunity to get him fired and jumped on it. Parents and students are protesting/petitioning for Mr. Haraughty to be given his job bad. It’s Ostmeyer, the principal, that needs to go, not the teacher.

I’m sure he was the greatest teacher, and all that jazz, it’s unfortunate he was fired, and I’m sure the new principle sucks….I was just talking about my dick shaped state, because it’s not like I haven’t heard it before. Nowhere did I discuss anything about the teacher, just making jokes here.
